Longtime leader and advocate for educational opportunity to lead organization into its next chapter.
Esperanza, Inc. has appointed Zulayka "Zully" Ruiz-Barral, M.Ed., as Chief Executive Officer, naming a longtime leader whose 15-year tenure with the organization reflects Esperanza's commitment to developing talent, expanding educational opportunity, and strengthening Northeast Ohio's future workforce.
For 43 years, Esperanza has built pathways to opportunity through education, supporting learners at every stage of their journey. Through leadership development, academic support, postsecondary persistence, workforce readiness, and adult education programs, Esperanza works to ensure opportunity extends beyond the classroom and into meaningful careers and economic mobility.
Ruiz-Barral joined Esperanza in 2010 as a Family Engagement Coordinator and advanced through several leadership roles, including Director of Programs and, most recently, Interim Leader. During her tenure, she led award-winning initiatives that expanded educational access, strengthened workforce pathways, and improved outcomes for students, families, and adult learners.
"Zully's deep institutional knowledge, unwavering commitment to our mission, and steady leadership make her the right person to lead Esperanza into its next chapter," said Pam Hobe, President of Esperanza's Board of Directors. "Her strong relationships within our community and among our staff, combined with her understanding of our culture and impact, position her to build upon Esperanza's legacy while advancing our vision for the future."
As CEO, Ruiz-Barral will lead the organization's strategic priorities and continue its work to expand educational attainment, workforce readiness, and economic opportunity throughout the communities Esperanza serves.
"I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me by our Board, staff, partners, and community," said Ruiz-Barral. "While there is important work ahead, I am confident in the strength of our team, the resilience of our community, and the dedication of those who believe in Esperanza's mission. Together, we will continue expanding pathways to educational achievement, workforce success, and economic opportunity for generations to come.
"I am committed to leading with integrity, purpose, and gratitude as we build upon Esperanza's legacy and continue creating opportunities that empower individuals, strengthen families, and transform communities."
A first-generation college graduate and bilingual nonprofit executive, Ruiz-Barral brings extensive experience in program leadership, fundraising, and organizational management. She has helped secure more than $2.5 million in grant and philanthropic funding to expand educational, workforce development, and community-based initiatives, advancing Esperanza's impact across Northeast Ohio.
